Usage Note
Estero functions mainly in the fixed phrase all'estero (abroad) and dall'estero (from abroad). As an adjective it means 'foreign' (ministero degli affari esteri — foreign affairs ministry). It is masculine, but used almost exclusively with the definite article in set expressions rather than as a free-standing noun.
Examples
"Mia sorella vive all'estero."
Natural Translation
My sister lives abroad.
Literal Translation
My sister lives at-the-abroad.
