Usage Note

Fidare is almost always used as the reflexive fidarsi (mi fido di lui = I trust him); the non-reflexive form is rare in modern Italian. The construction is fidarsi di + person/thing. A common proverb is Fidarsi è bene, non fidarsi è meglio ('To trust is good, not to trust is better'), the Italian equivalent of 'better safe than sorry'.
