finito

finished

adjective fee-NEE-toh Rare

Origin: Latin finitus (finire, to end)

Also means

limited

Usage Note

Finito functions as both a past participle of finire and a standalone adjective meaning 'over', 'done', or (in mathematics/philosophy) 'finite' as opposed to infinito. In colloquial speech sei finito! is a strong insult meaning 'you're done for / washed up'. The mathematical sense (un insieme finito, a finite set) is common in academic Italian.

Examples

"Il tempo è finito, dobbiamo smettere."

Natural Translation

Time is up, we have to stop.
