fondere

to melt, to fuse

verb FON-deh-reh Rare

Origin: Latin fundere (to pour)

Also means

to merge (companies, ideas)

Usage Note

Fondere is irregular: past participle fuso (not fonduto). It takes avere for transitive uses (ho fuso il burro) and essere in some intransitive ones (si è fuso — it melted). It also means to merge organisations: le due aziende si sono fuse (the two companies merged).

Examples

"Devi fondere il burro a fuoco basso."

Natural Translation

You need to melt the butter over low heat.
