fortunato

lucky

adjective for-TOO-nah-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin fortunatus (blessed by fortune).

Also means

fortunate

Usage Note

Fortunato agrees in gender and number: fortunata (f), fortunati (m pl), fortunate (f pl). It describes both a person ('a lucky person') and a situation ('a fortunate outcome'). Note the false friend trap: Italian fortuna = luck/fortune, but English 'fortune' in the sense of great wealth is better rendered as ricchezza or patrimonio.

Examples

"Sei fortunato ad avere tanti amici."

Natural Translation

You are lucky to have so many friends.
