to force

verb for-TSAH-reh Rare

Also means

to break open

Usage Note

Forzare means to compel someone or to break something open by force (forzare una serratura = to force a lock). It takes avere as its auxiliary in compound tenses. Do not confuse with sforzarsi (to make an effort, reflexive), which implies voluntary exertion rather than coercion.
