Ieri is invariable and always refers to the day immediately before today. Key compounds: ieri sera ('last night / yesterday evening'), ieri mattina ('yesterday morning'), l'altro ieri ('the day before yesterday'). It is commonly used with the passato prossimo tense in spoken Italian.
