ignorare

to ignore

verb ee-nyoh-RAH-reh Less Common

Also means

to be unaware of

Usage Note

Ignorare is a false friend trap: it primarily means 'to be ignorant of, not to know' (ignoro il suo nome = 'I don't know his name'), and only secondarily 'to deliberately ignore someone'. When the intended meaning is 'to ignore (someone)', Italians often use non badare a or fare finta di non vedere. It takes avere.

Examples

"Ignoro il motivo della sua assenza."

Natural Translation

I am unaware of the reason for his absence.
