immergere
to immerse
verb eem-MER-jeh-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin immergere, from in- + mergere (to dip).

Usage Note
Immergere takes avere as its auxiliary; the reflexive immergersi takes essere and can be used both literally (to dive into water) and figuratively (immergersi nel lavoro — 'to immerse oneself in work'). It is an irregular verb in the past participle: immerso (not immerguto). Do not confuse with emergere (to emerge), its opposite.
