immigrare

to immigrate

verb eem-mee-GRAH-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin 'immigrare': 'in-' (into) + 'migrare' (to move).

Usage Note

Immigrare takes essere in compound tenses: è immigrato in Italia (he immigrated to Italy). Italian distinguishes clearly between immigrare (to arrive and settle) and emigrare (to leave one's country). The noun is immigrante (immigrant) or immigrato (an established immigrant). Do not confuse with migrare, which is used for animals or seasonal migration.
