Impadronire is almost exclusively used as the reflexive impadronirsi di (to take possession of, to master): impadronirsi di una lingua (to master a language), impadronirsi del potere (to seize power). It conjugates with essere in compound tenses as a reflexive: si è impadronito della situazione (he took control of the situation).
