impigliare

to entangle

verb eem-peel-YAH-reh Rare

Also means

to snag

Usage Note

Impigliare means to catch or tangle something in an obstacle: il filo si è impigliato nei rami ('the thread got caught in the branches'). The reflexive impigliarsi is far more common than the transitive form. Figuratively it means to get caught up in a situation: impigliarsi in una bugia ('to get tangled up in a lie'). Reflexive takes essere.

Examples

"La giacca si è impigliata in un ramo."

Natural Translation

The jacket got caught on a branch.

Literal Translation

The jacket itself is entangled in a branch.
