Also means
to convene; to announce
Usage Note
Indire is an irregular verb (past participle indetto) used in formal and institutional language: indire un'elezione ('to call an election'), indire uno sciopero ('to call a strike'), indire un concorso ('to announce a competition'). It takes avere. The everyday verb for calling someone on the phone is chiamare, not indire — this word is strictly formal/bureaucratic.
Examples
"Il governo ha indetto nuove elezioni."
Natural Translation
The government called new elections.
