indugiare
to linger
verb TEP Rare
Origin: From Latin indutiare, related to indutiae (truce, pause).
Also means
to dawdle, to delay
Usage Note
Indugiare is conjugated as a regular -are verb but retains the 'gi' before -a/-o endings to preserve the soft 'j' sound: indugio, indugiano. It takes avere as its auxiliary in compound tenses: ho indugiato. Often used with su — indugiare su un problema ('to dwell on a problem').
Examples
"Non indugiare, dobbiamo partire subito."
Natural Translation
Don't linger, we must leave immediately.
