infernale

infernal

adjective een-fer-NAH-leh Rare

Origin: From Latin infernalis, from infernus (below, underworld).

Also means

hellish

Usage Note

Infernale is used both literally (relating to hell: le fiamme infernali) and colloquially to express extreme intensity — un caldo infernale (hellish heat), un rumore infernale (an infernal noise). Like most -ale adjectives, it is invariable for gender but takes -i in the plural: ritmi infernali.

Examples

"Fa un caldo infernale oggi!"

Natural Translation

It's hellishly hot today!

Literal Translation

It-makes a heat infernal today.
