Infondato describes an accusation, claim, or fear that has no factual basis — accusa infondata (unfounded accusation), timore infondato (groundless fear). It is a formal adjective; in everyday speech Italians may say senza fondamento or simply falso. The prefix in- is the standard negative privative.
