Ipertrofia in medicine denotes abnormal enlargement of an organ or tissue (e.g. ipertrofia cardiaca — cardiac hypertrophy). In fitness, ipertrofia muscolare (muscle hypertrophy) is the desired outcome of resistance training. Figuratively, it describes excessive growth of bureaucracy or institutions (ipertrofia burocratica). The opposite is atrofia (atrophy).
