ipotecare

to mortgage

verb ee-poh-teh-KAH-reh Rare

Also means

to jeopardise

Usage Note

Ipotecare is used both literally (to take out a mortgage on property) and figuratively: ipotecare il futuro means 'to mortgage the future' (i.e. to compromise future prospects). It takes avere as its auxiliary. The spelling changes in the present: ipoteco, ipotechi, ipoteca — the 'c' becomes 'ch' before 'i' and 'e' to preserve the hard /k/ sound.

Examples

"Ha dovuto ipotecare la casa per pagare i debiti."

Natural Translation

He had to mortgage the house to pay his debts.
