irreparabile

irreparable

adjective eer-reh-pah-RAH-bee-leh Rare

Origin: From Latin irreparabilis, from in- (not) + reparare (to repair).

Also means

beyond repair

Usage Note

Irreparabile is invariable for gender (same form masculine and feminine); only the plural changes: irreparabili. It describes damage, harm, or loss that cannot be undone. The adverb irreparabilmente ('irreparably') is also common. A learner might confuse it with irrecuperabile ('unrecoverable'), which is slightly stronger.

Examples

"Il danno all'ambiente è ormai irreparabile."

Natural Translation

The damage to the environment is now irreparable.
