Usage Note

Legume is the botanical and culinary term for pod-bearing plants and their seeds — lentils, chickpeas, beans, peas. In everyday speech Italians also use legumi as a plural collective: mangiare legumi (to eat pulses). The singular legume is less common than the plural.
