levare
to raise, to lift
verb leh-VAH-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin levare (to lift, to lighten).
Also means
to remove, to take away
Usage Note
Levare means to raise or remove something. The reflexive levarsi means 'to get up' or 'to take off' (clothing): levati di mezzo! ('get out of the way!' — very colloquial). It is a near-synonym of togliere in the sense of removing, and of alzare in the sense of lifting. Takes avere as auxiliary.
Examples
"Leva le mani dal tavolo."
Natural Translation
Take your hands off the table.
Literal Translation
Remove the hands from-the table.
