lungi

far

adverb LOON-jee Rare

Origin: From Latin longe (far off).

Usage Note

Lungi is a literary and formal adverb, almost exclusively found in the fixed phrase lungi da ('far from'): lungi da me l'idea ('far be it from me to think that'). It is virtually obsolete outside this construction — in everyday speech, lontano ('far') is used instead. Essere lungi dall'obiettivo ('to be far from the goal') is a more formal journalistic usage.

Examples

"Siamo ancora lungi dal trovare una soluzione."

Natural Translation

We are still far from finding a solution.
