maledetto

damned

adjective mah-leh-DET-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin maledictus, past participle of maledicere (to speak ill of, to curse).

Also means

cursed

Usage Note

Maledetto functions as an adjective ('damned', 'wretched') and as a mild expletive before a noun (quel maledetto traffico! — that damned traffic!). It can also mean literally cursed in a supernatural sense. The past participle of maledire (to curse) and the adjective are identical in form. Stronger in register than dannato in some contexts.

Examples

"Quel maledetto computer si è rotto di nuovo."

Natural Translation

That damned computer broke again.
