neutralizzare

to neutralize

verb neh-oo-trah-leed-DZAH-reh Rare

Origin: From 'neutrale' (neutral), from Latin 'neutralis'.

Usage Note

Neutralizzare is used in chemistry (to neutralize an acid), military contexts (to neutralize a threat), and everyday speech (to cancel out an effect). It takes avere as auxiliary. Neutralizzare un odore means to eliminate a smell; neutralizzare il nemico means to put the enemy out of action. It is more forceful and complete in connotation than ridurre (to reduce).
