Occorrenza has two distinct registers. In formal or technical writing it means 'occurrence' or 'instance' (as in linguistics or computing). In slightly older or literary usage, all'occorrenza means 'if the need arises, when necessary' — a fixed phrase still common today. The plural occorrenze is regular.
