olivo
olive tree
noun oh-LEE-voh Rare
Origin: Latin oliva (olive), from Greek elaia.
Usage Note
Olivo is the tree; oliva or uliva (regional) is the fruit (olive). In Tuscany and southern Italy, ancient olive trees (olivi secolari) are culturally iconic. Do not confuse olivo (tree) with oliva (fruit): raccogliere le olive dall'olivo means to pick olives from the olive tree. The adjective olivastro means olive-coloured (dark yellowish-green).
Examples
"Il giardino è pieno di olivi centenari."
Natural Translation
The garden is full of centuries-old olive trees.
