Usage Note

Opportunismo denotes the practice of taking advantage of circumstances for personal gain without regard for principles — a charge often levelled in Italian political debate. The adjective is opportunista (also used as a noun), which is invariable in gender. Distinguish from the neutral opportunità (opportunity), which carries no negative connotation.
