Orale can also function as a noun (un orale, m) meaning an oral exam, which is very common in Italian schools and universities: ho passato l'orale di storia ('I passed the oral history exam'). As an adjective it describes anything relating to the mouth or to speech, such as igiene orale (oral hygiene) or tradizione orale (oral tradition).
