bones

noun OHS-sah Rare

Usage Note

Ossa is the irregular feminine plural of l'osso (bone, masculine singular). This is a classic gender-switching plural: l'osso (m sg) → le ossa (f pl), following the Latin neuter pattern. The masculine plural gli ossi also exists but usually refers to bones as scraps (e.g., for a dog), while le ossa refers to the bones of a body.

Examples

"Le ossa del cranio sono molto resistenti."

Natural Translation

The bones of the skull are very strong.
