Usage Note

Pecora refers to a sheep, particularly a ewe (female sheep by default). The male sheep (ram) is il montone or l'ariete. The plural le pecore is regular. Pecora nera (black sheep) is used figuratively in Italian just as in English — the odd one out in a family or group.
