Usage Note
Portante is the present participle of portare used as an adjective. In construction, muro portante means a load-bearing wall, as opposed to a partition (muro divisorio). In telecommunications, frequenza portante or simply la portante (used as a feminine noun) is the carrier frequency. Both senses are common in technical Italian.
