profittare

to profit, to take advantage

verb proh-feet-TAH-reh Rare

Also means

to benefit from

Usage Note

Profittare is followed by di (profittare di un'occasione = to take advantage of an opportunity). It uses avere as its auxiliary and can carry a neutral or slightly opportunistic tone. It is a false friend trap for English speakers: profittare does not mean 'to profit' in the financial sense — use guadagnare or trarre profitto for that.

Examples

"Ha profittato dell'offerta per comprare il biglietto."

Natural Translation

He took advantage of the offer to buy the ticket.
