Usage Note
Rassegnato describes someone who has accepted an unpleasant situation with resignation rather than fighting it: un sorriso rassegnato (a resigned smile). It comes from the verb rassegnarsi (to resign oneself). Distinguish it from dimissionario, which means 'having formally resigned from a post'.
Examples
"Accettò la sconfitta con un'aria rassegnata."
Natural Translation
He accepted the defeat with a resigned air.
