rassegnare
to resign
verb rahs-seh-NYAH-reh Rare
Origin: Latin resignare (to unseal, give back), from re- + signare (to seal).
Also means
to submit
Usage Note
Rassegnare in its own right means to submit formally (rassegnare le dimissioni, to hand in one's resignation). The reflexive rassegnarsi means to resign oneself to something, to accept the inevitable (mi rassegno alla situazione). The two uses are distinct: the transitive is administrative, the reflexive is emotional.
Examples
"Ha deciso di rassegnare le dimissioni."
Natural Translation
He decided to hand in his resignation.
