resta

awn (of grain)

noun REH-stah Rare

Also means

string (of garlic or onions)

Usage Note

Resta (feminine) is the bristly awn of a cereal ear (la resta del grano) and, by extension, a plaited string of garlic or onions (una resta d'aglio). Do not confuse it with the masculine resto (remainder, change), nor with resta, the third-person singular present of the verb restare (he/she/it stays), a homograph.

Natural Translation

The awn of the wheat is prickly.
