tax collector's office; lottery/betting shop
noun ree-cheh-vee-TOH-ryah Rare
Usage Note
Ricevitoria is a licensed shop that acts as an agent for state services — most commonly a ricevitoria del lotto (lottery outlet) or ricevitoria delle imposte (tax-collection point). These small shops are ubiquitous in Italy. Do not confuse with ricevitore (receiver, in electronics or sport) or ricevuta (receipt). The feminine gender follows the pattern of institutional -ia nouns.
Examples
"Ha giocato al lotto alla ricevitoria sotto casa."
Natural Translation
She played the lottery at the shop downstairs.
Literal Translation
She played at-the lottery at-the lottery-shop under house.
