rimanere
to remain
verb ree-mah-NEH-reh Common
Origin: Latin remanere (to stay behind)
Also means
to stay
Usage Note
Rimanere is conjugated with essere as auxiliary, so the past participle agrees with the subject: sono rimasto (m. sg.), sono rimasta (f. sg.). It has irregular forms: present rimango, past participle rimasto. The phrase rimane da vedere (it remains to be seen) is very idiomatic. Do not confuse with restare, which is nearly synonymous but slightly more colloquial.
Examples
"Siamo rimasti a casa tutto il giorno."
Natural Translation
We stayed home all day.
Literal Translation
We-are remained at home all the day.
