to postpone

verb reen-VYAH-reh Less Common

Also means

to refer back

Usage Note

Rinviare means to send back, postpone, or refer a matter to another body (il caso è stato rinviato a giudizio — the case was referred to trial). In everyday speech it most often means to put off a meeting or deadline: rinviare la riunione. The noun is rinvio. Do not confuse with rimandare, which overlaps in meaning but leans more toward sending back a student to repeat a year.

Examples

"Hanno rinviato la partita a causa della pioggia."

Natural Translation

They postponed the match because of the rain.
