risalire

to go back up; to date back to

verb ree-zah-LEE-reh Less Common

Origin: From Latin re- + salire (to leap/climb).

Also means

to trace back

Usage Note

Risalire takes essere as its auxiliary — sono risalito (I went back up). It has two distinct uses: physical ('to climb back up', risalire le scale) and temporal ('to date back to', risale al Medioevo). In the temporal sense it is close to datare but implies tracing a chain back to an origin. Remember the essere auxiliary for agreement: la data risale al 1800.

Examples

"Il castello risale al Medioevo."
