saluto
greeting, salute
noun sah-LOO-toh Rare
Origin: Latin salutare (to wish health), from salus (health, safety).
Also means
farewell
Usage Note
Saluto covers both hello-type greetings and farewell gestures. Fare un saluto means to wave or greet someone. The plural saluti is commonly used to close letters and emails: Cordiali saluti ('Kind regards'). Do not confuse with salute ('health') — a one-letter difference with a very different meaning.
Examples
"Ha fatto un saluto con la mano."
Natural Translation
He gave a wave of the hand.
Literal Translation
He made a greeting with the hand.
