Scacchiere is masculine (lo scacchiere, pl. gli scacchieri). Its primary meaning is the chessboard, but in military and geopolitical journalism lo scacchiere means a theatre of operations or strategic arena: lo scacchiere mediterraneo (the Mediterranean theatre). It is also the Italian name for the British Exchequer.
