Usage Note
Scheggia refers to a sharp fragment broken off from wood, glass, metal, or bone. The plural schegge is regular. It appears in the expression una scheggia di legno (a wood splinter) and in military contexts for shrapnel fragments. Note the 'sch' cluster is always a hard 'sk' sound in Italian, not 'sh'.
Examples
"Mi è entrata una scheggia nel dito."
Natural Translation
A splinter got into my finger.
Literal Translation
To-me entered a splinter in-the finger.
