scia

wake, trail

noun SHEE-ah Rare

Also means

slipstream

Usage Note

Scia (pronounced 'shee-ah', with 'sc' before 'i' giving the 'sh' sound) is the trail left behind a moving object — a ship's wake, a vapour trail, a ski track in snow. Figuratively nella scia di qualcuno means 'following in someone's footsteps'. Do not confuse with sci (skiing) which sounds similar. The plural is scie.

Examples

"La barca lasciava una lunga scia sull'acqua."

Natural Translation

The boat left a long wake on the water.
