sfortunato

unlucky

adjective sfor-TOO-nah-toh Rare

Also means

unfortunate

Usage Note

Sfortunato is the direct opposite of fortunato — both are formed from fortuna (fortune) with the prefix s- (reversive). It agrees in gender and number: sfortunata (f), sfortunati (m pl), sfortunate (f pl). Note that sfortuna itself is a false-step trap: English 'misfortune' translates as sfortuna, not disfortuna.

Examples

"È stato molto sfortunato con il lavoro."

Natural Translation

He has been very unlucky with work.
