sfregiare

to slash

verb zfreh-JAH-reh Rare

Also means

to scar

Usage Note

Sfregiare means to slash or disfigure a surface — a face, a painting, or a car. It takes avere as its auxiliary. The derived noun sfregio (slash, scar, affront) carries a connotation of deliberate dishonour; in Renaissance Italy a sfregio on the face was a mark of vendetta. In modern Italian sfregiare un'opera d'arte means to vandalize a work of art.

Examples

"Qualcuno ha sfregiato il muro con un coltello."
