Slegare is the direct opposite of legare (to tie). It can be used literally (slegare il cane = to untie the dog) or figuratively (slegare la fantasia = to free the imagination). It is a regular -are verb. In reflexive form, slegarsi means to free oneself or come undone (il nodo si è slegato = the knot came undone).
