Soprattassa is a supplementary tax or surcharge imposed on top of a base tax or fee — soprattassa postale (postal surcharge). It is a formal fiscal term; in everyday speech supplemento or maggiorazione are more common for 'surcharge'. Note the double 't' — held across the syllable break (soh-praht-TAHS-sah).
