Spiccato comes from spiccare (to stand out, to detach). As an adjective it means distinctly noticeable: uno spiccato senso dell'umorismo (a pronounced sense of humour), una spiccata tendenza (a marked tendency). In music, spiccato is an international term for a bowing technique where the bow bounces off the string.
