svolgere
to carry out
Origin: From Latin dis-volvere (to unroll), via Italian s-volgere.
Also means
to develop; to unfold
Usage Note
Svolgere takes avere as auxiliary (ha svolto) and is common in formal Italian: svolgere un'attività ('to carry out an activity'), svolgere un compito ('to perform a task'). The reflexive svolgersi means 'to take place, to unfold' (la storia si svolge a Roma = 'the story takes place in Rome'). The past participle svolto is irregular, and the stress falls on the first syllable.
Examples
"Il convegno si svolgerà presso la sede centrale."
Natural Translation
The conference will take place at the main headquarters.
Literal Translation
The conference itself will-take-place at the seat central.
