tacco

heel

noun TAHK-koh Rare

Usage Note

Tacco refers to the heel of a shoe, not of the foot (the body part is il tallone or il calcagno). High heels are tacchi alti and stilettos are tacchi a spillo. The plural is regular: i tacchi. Learners also encounter tacco in tacco dodici (a very high stiletto heel, literally 'heel twelve [centimetres]').

Examples

"Quei tacchi alti le fanno male ai piedi."

Natural Translation

Those high heels hurt her feet.

Literal Translation

Those heels high to-her do harm to-the feet.
